Monday 26 January, the real life merged with virtual life in the Beurs van Berlage. After months of preparation it was finally going to happen, the EFA-AIFW2009 show. The Beurs van Berlage was filled with guests, even people were waiting outside looking for a chance to get in and join the show too. After the shows of Eleonore de Ruuk and Melanie Brown, the simultaneous RL-SL show started. DJ Damien.S was tuning and on a big screen you could see the show in Second Life as the guests in Second Life could see the show in Amsterdam. Unfortunate, the camera did not work with the PC, but with the web-cam the atmosphere could be felt and a glimp of the show could be seen in the Beurs van Berlage at Ischia.

It was really special to see the both shows at the same time, each with it’s own possibilities. The show in Amsterdam with the speed of the models and the show in Secondlife with the luxery touches. But one thing for sure, both shows had the same character, same feeling, same enthusiastic public and breathing the same atmosphere. Although the EFA-AIFW2009 was maybe not perfect at each detail, all participants can be satisfied and proud on the result. Another step forward has been taken to merge the real life fashion world with the virtual fashion world.

I want to give a big applause to Sysy Chapman, Neferia Abel, Sascha Frangilli, Digit Darkes and Zaara Kohime. This designer team did a fantastic job by reproducing the RL-designs in Second Life for the EFA-AIFW2009 show. The challenge was big. They had to work with working pictures of the RL designer, Jennifer Delano. There was no possibility to see how these designs move, feel, look and fit on a model. And the pictures were not of a very brilliant quality. Also the style of the designs was complete different that they were used to normally. So a complete other way of working, thinking and improvisation was required. You could see the results during the EFA-AIFW2009 show.  But also these outfits are now for sale in the shops of the designers. Also you can read at their blogs how they experienced the challenge.

For me it was nice to see how everybody coped with this challenge. And great I had the change to have a little view in their kitchen, explaining me what was possible and what difficulties SL can give you when designing clothes. Certainly I will look different now at the designs I can find in SL. What also is nice, that you still can recognise the style of each designer in the reproduced outfits. Sysy, Neferia, Sascha, Digit and Zaara, I want to thank you all for this experience, it was great working with you and nice to know you all a little bit more now! Keep up the good work you all deliver.

EFA - AIFW2009

About Amsterdam Fashion Week

“AIFW is steadily establishing itself as a young and directional alternative to the world’s more traditional fashion weeks. Focusing on Amsterdam’s reputation as an inspiring city, the AIFW programme combines commerce with creativity. Alongside our catwalk show schedule our programme includes fashion events, lectures, exhibitions, retail initiatives and parties. As well as a showcase for Dutch fashion, AIFW provides a stage for the growing New Luxury segment, that so far was stuck between existing mainstream trade events and traditional couture weeks. Only an hour or so away from anywhere, our city has a lot to offer: a growing pool of talent, an inspiring place to visit and a vibrant place to do business. Editions of AIFW were held twice a year since July 2004. AIFW is attracting a growing audience of directional international”.

I must confess, I did not know a lot about Sascha Frangilli.  I saw some nice pictures passing by in the fashionfeeds and it was clear you have to visit Sascha’s Design when you need a gown to steel the show.  But I am glad I have had the chance to get to know her a little bit more, she being one of the designers of the EFA-AIFW2009 event.

And a funny surprise, like me she is dutch:  “I am from Holland and live in the province Brabant nearby Breda. I originally come from ‘t Gooi, but lived all over the world (Australia, USA and France).  I am single and live with my young daughter in a small town and work nearly full-time in RL.”

Sascha opened her store in March last year and started designing in late 2007: “I bought the infamous Business in a Box around March/April 2007 and was totally disgusted with what I found inside.  I wanted to make flexi dresses…. not flexified!  Then around the summer of 2007 I finally got Photoshop on my pc and had an extremely hard time with it, as I have no graphic background whatsoever.  It took me around 6 months on and off to figure out PS out. And the break-through came late December 2007.  To make a long story short, I have been really designing since late 2007/early 2008.”

For the EFA-AIFW2009 show you have to reproduce 4 outfits from the RL-show. The RL-designer describes her designs as follow: “My common designs are simple and wearable dresses. Those are most of the time made from the unusual choice of material.”  How far does your style meet this style? And can you replace yourself in this style and work with it?

Sascha: “Haha, well I make detailed ballroom gowns with skirts ranging from Man Killers (the infamous battleskirt) to sleek skirts.  I try to make detailed clothing that can be worn for a very long time and that are timeless.  I always include a minimum of 2-3 different flexi skirts so the new owner can always chose what kind of skirt she wants to wear.  My designs are not really simple, I don´t make particular kind of dresses you could wear to the beach, but you sure as hell can wear them to any dance club/ballroom club.”

You are placed in the theme “Soon”  for the show. Do you have some feeling with this theme related to your common style? Does it fit you?

Sascha: “Like I said, I make timeless designs, so it could fit into any category, but no to be honest, I am not really into an avant-garde futuristic style.”

The color of the designs you will create for this show is white. Do you use this color a lot? What is the special challenge for this color? Do you have a special connection with this color?

Sascha: “I myself prefer black and red, but I noticed a lot of my customers like white as well, so I always try to include the colour white in my range of colours.  White is kind of hard to make on SL, unless you are wearing bodylights, LOL.”
